The Cressington 108 series sputter coaters are designed to quickly coat non-conductive SEM samples with a thin conductive coating of precious metal. They all incorporate unique constant current control, low voltage sputter power supply and ultra-cool sputter head. This enables quality coating of non-conductive SEM samples without heating the sample surface. The compact coating systems with the efficient vacuum system enable short coating cycles on a small footprint. They offer fine grain coatings for standard tungsten SEMs and table top SEMs. Most widely used sputter target materials are gold and gold/palladium. Other materials available are platimum and platinum/palladium and silver. For EDS, CL and BSED applications they can be supplemented with the dedicated Cressington 108carbon coaters. Separate, dedicated coaters avoid any contamination issues and deliver high quality, high purity sample coatings. The choice of Cressington 108 sputter coaters include:
The Cressington 108auto is the most popular coating system, favoured by many SEM labs. All instruments are compatible with 230V / 50Hz.

Cressington 108manual SEM sputter coater
The Cressington 108manual sputter coater is a compact, manual sputter coater designed for coating non-conductive SEM sample with a thin layer of precious metal. The Cressington 108manual is intended for low volume sample processing, tight budgets and for coating samples for table top SEMs. All controls are placed on the front panel: power, needle valve control, timer and start/stop sputtering.
The Cressington 108manual includes an innovative and efficient sputter head design, powered by a micro-processor controlled power supply. The low voltage, ultra-cool, planar sputter head with wrap-around dark space shield avoids sample heating during normal sputter routines. The 108manual enables fine grain coating and includes a unique vacuum independent constant current control. Vacuum is provided by the 108 pumping system which consists of a compact 2.5m3/hr dual stage rotary pump with integrated anti-vibration tray.
Optionally available is the Cressington MTM10 thickness monitor to precisely measure the coating thickness.

Cressington 108auto SEM sputter coater
The Cressington 108auto sputter coater is an advanced, compact and fully automatic bench top SEM sputter coater. It provides fine grain coating for standard SEM applications. With the automatic gas handling and auto coating cycles it is particulary suitable for large volume sample coating, reproducible coating and coating with Pt or Pt/Pd to achieve a coating with an even finer grain size.
The controls on the front panel enable full automatic coating cycles with manual override at each step. Alternatively, the coating process can be controlled manually. The controls of the front panel show the exact status of each step in the coating sequence.
The 108auto incorporates an efficient, ultra-cool, low voltage planar sputter head with wrap-around dark space shield to avoid sample heating during normal sputter routines.
It enables fine grain
coating and includes a state-of-the-art vacuum independent constant current control. Vacuum
is provided by the efficient 108 pumping system which consists
of a compact 2.5m3/hr dual stage rotary pump with integrated anti-vibration tray.
For improved uniformity of rough samples the optional 108 rotary-tilting stage is recommended.

The Cressington 108auto/SE sputter coater is based on the 108auto SEM sputter coater. It has all the advantages of the 108auto, but with a larger Ø150 x 165mm glass chamber and an additional shutter in front of the target. Additionally the 108auto/SE can be equipped with an optional Rotary-Tilting (R-T) stage or an optional Rotary-Planetary-Tilting (R-P-T) stage. The 108auto/SE SEM sputter coater can accommodate larger samples or multiple samples on the R-P-T stage with its 4 sample holders. With the R-P-T stage, a high degree of uniformity can be achieved. The target shutter allows cleaning of non-precious targets.
With the optional R-T or R-P-T stage, chamber height can be varied between 165 and 250mm; the top-plate is attached to a telescopic post.

Compact, efficient, desk-top pumping systems for the Cressington coaters
The compact, desk-top vacuum pumping system for the Cressington 108 series consists of a highly efficient direct drive 2 stage rotary vacuum pump, anti vibration tray and all metal vacuum couplings. The pumping system is placed directly behind the coater to ensure an extremely fast pump-down time of less than 30 seconds to 0.1mbar. The results are short cycle times, responsive pumping and improved coating results. There are two systems available:
